Using the Slash

The slash (/) goes by a variety of names. It is also called the virgule, solidus, or slant. It is also named based on direction, such as the forward slash (/), which is our main focus, and the backward slash (\).

What is a slash?

A slash is a punctuation mark that slants forward to the right, which is typically used to signify alternatives. 


Uses of the slash

The slash is used for several reasons. Let’s take a look at each and the examples. 


1. Slashes are used to signify alternatives

Examples:

  • Please select your preferred pronoun: he/she/they.

  • The event will happen rain/shine.

  • You can use paper/cloth bags.


2. Slashes are used to signify two-year spans

Examples:

  • The academic year 2023/2024 begins in September.

  • The fiscal year 2022/2023 showed an increase in revenue.

  • The football season 2021/2022 was memorable.


3. Slashes are used with dates

Examples:

  • The event is scheduled for 12/01/2024.

  • His birthday is 05/23/1990.

  • The deadline is 03/15/2023.


4. Slashes are used in abbreviations

Examples:

  • w/o (without)

  • n/a (not applicable)

  • c/o (care of)


5. Slashes are used as fraction bars

Examples: 

  • 1/2 (one-half)

  • 3/4 (three-quarters)

  • 5/8 (five-eighths)


6. Slashes are used to show line breaks in poetry

Examples:

  • "The woods are lovely, dark, and deep, / But I have promises to keep, / And miles to go before I sleep."

  • "Hope is the thing with feathers / That perches in the soul, / And sings the tune without the words."

  • "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? / Thou art more lovely and more temperate."


7. Slashes are used in URLs and other paths
